CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS OF THE STRESS
HORMONES SECRETION IN PATIENTS WITH
ASTHMA
U.S.Landyshev, V.P.Mishuk, E.V.Orlova, A.V.Petrov.
Amur State Medical Academy, Blagoveshchensk, Russia.
Investigation of the circadian rhythms of the hypophysial-adrenal
and hypophysial-thyroid systems was made in 17 patients with severe
asthma who did not receive glucocorticoid drugs. The control group
consisted of 5 healthy persons.
The circadian biorhythms of the invistigated systems were studied
on the grounds of the daily sixfold investigations /8,12,16,20,24 and 4
o’clock/ made continuosly within 48 hours. The circadian biorhythms
of these systems were determined by the content of the hormones —
hydrocortison, triiodothyronine, thyroxin, TTH and ACTH in the blood
serum. The concentration of the hormones was determined by the
radioimmunologic method. The mathematical analysis was made by
the cosinor — method on P.C. Healthy persons have the morning
type of the circadian biorhythm for hydrocortison, triiodothyronine and
thyroxin.
In patients with severe asthma there take place the changes of the
biorhythm of the hormone production by the thyroid gland and adre-
nal cortex, all the three hormones (hydrocortison, triiodothyronine,
thyroxin) being produced by the endocrine glands synchronously. In
patients the first top rhythm (acrophase I) of these hormones moved
to the day hours, the second top rhythm (acrophase II) of the hor-
mone production fell on the evening hours. The bathyphase of the
hormonies fell on night.
The maximum concentration of ACTH and TTH in healthy per-
sones was observed within the morning hours. In patients with asth-
ma the acrophase of ACTH and TTH production was observed with-
in the night hours with the interval from 24 till 6 o’clock a.m. When
analyzing the circadian concentration of the hormones produced by
the endocrine glands it is possible to note an acute decrease of the
function of the adrenal cortex in patients with severe asthma (the
hydrocortison concentration decreased 2 times as compared to the
norm), the thyroid hormones circadian concentration decreased 1,5
times as compared to that of healthy people.
Thus dissynchronism of the investigated hormones is registered in
severe asthma and it results in the displacement of the maximum
concentration of the hormones to the day and evening hours with the
minimum output of them at night.
The maximum concentration of ACTH and TTH in patients with
severe asthma was observed within the night hours.
